This book shows King James VI and I; king of Scotland and England; in an unaccustomed light. Long regarded as inept; pedantic; and whimsical; James is shown here as an astute and far-sighted statesman whose reign was focused on achieving a permanent union between his two kingdoms and a peaceful and stable community of nations throughout Europe.

A Remarkable AchievementBy Walking with WhitmanStudents of British military history will find this book to be a necessary addition to their libraries. It is the first volume in an extraordinary series of books recounting the achievements of Great Britain's military regiments throughout history. The first book includes thirty-five of them; beginning with the Life Guards; which won enduring fame at Waterloo; and ends with the 11th Hussars; Cardigan's "Cherry Pickers;" which were part of the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava. In addition to recounting each regiment's actions in their most important battles; historian Dorian Bond provides riveting accounts of the individual exploits of its most famous officers and men. Elegantly mounted and full of dramatic color photographs and paintings; it is a book to be savored page by page. I am already looking forward to the next volume.
