Intriguing and illuminating read even if you aren't into fashionBy TarraFascinating how the complex styles and adornments of the period reflected far more than simple fashion. In today's anything-goes-style it is hard to imagine that the use of a button; way a scarf was tied; color and type of fabric were important; revealing insights about the wearer's loyalties; interests; education and birth right. Keeping up with the fashion of the day was far more than merely being cool; it could be a matter of life and death. Additionally entertaining is the reveal about the elite classes that indulged in dress-up games playing the roles of peasant bakers; miilkmaids and farmers. However; as documented here; these costumes while looking similar to the starving fashions of the day actually lacked the coarseness; filth and fraying that marked the reality of true peasant attire. This book deepens the readers understanding of the period while providing fun tidbits for your "did you know?" moments.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
