DOC Fenians; Freedmen; and Southern Whites: Race and Nationality in the Era of Reconstruction (Conflicting Worlds: New Dimensions of the American Civil War) by W. E. B. Du Bois in History

Description

Halleck is a challenged biography of controversial figure Union General-in-Chief Henry Wager Halleck; who was cast into negative stereotype by many historians since Appomattox more famously by Lincoln's secretary of the navy; Gideon Welles. The author argues that Halleck has been greatly underrated as a war theorist because of past writers' failure to do justice to his close involvement with movements basic to the development of the American military establishment. He concedes that "by all the touchstones used to judge great captains of the past; Halleck was a failure;" but maintains he was nonetheless; "the 'Old Brains' of the Union Army in the time of the testing of the nation."

There is a free; readable; public domain Kindle Edition of this book available. It is the better alternative.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. DuBois; the scholar and historianBy John WillW.E.B. DuBois was a major historical and controverisal figure for a long time; but but what led to that role was his incredible acheivements as a scholar. The thoroughness of his reseach especially the wealth of primary sources is very convincing in regard to the points he made. Even with all the reasearch since he wrote the book; one can not help but become far more informed about political and economic environment that nurtured slavery and the slave trade in America.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful.
