Excellent contribution to understanding the influence of Religion in War.By Influence52Robert Hicks has given us a very informative; well researched and documented account on the nature; history and present influence of religion and war. It's one of the few books you'll want to read a second time. His theological education; experience as a Military Chaplain and professor gives him unique insight into the topic of both religion and war. I was especially impressed by his ability to be objectivity. He did not pull punches when dealing with Christian history or present day Christian extremism; nor did he ignore the extremes in modern Judaism. Although discussed with fewer details Hicks refuted the misconception that Buddhism and Hinduism are guiltless in when it comes to violence. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding the influence religion has in war; especially it's influence in the ongoing battles in the Middle East.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Must read!By Customer. noelle☺This book will give you the clearest; most concise and well researched history of how and why we got to the current place we are in with regard to religious terrorism. Dr. Hicks looks at the major religions; all beginning in the Middle East - Christians; Jews and Muslims equally fairly and dispassionately before writing his personal insights as a man of God; a retired military Chaplin and a professor of history. The understanding I gained about the decisions made at the end of WWII regarding the Middle East were particularly startling and enlightening. I recommend this book most highly to all who are concerned about our country and our place in the world!5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Students of terrorism and concerned Americans need to read this book!By HaystackFor those that are interested in the study of extremism and terrorism; or professors looking for an unbiased text book; this is a book that you should have in your library. What is most refreshing is the objective presentation of the history of "religious terrorism;" its roots; its leaders; the religious motivations; etc. Yesterday it appears we had a religious terrorism attack at the Ohio State University! This issue affects all Americans who are concerned about the future of our country and practical policies that can keep our country safer from subsequent attacks such as yesterdays. I can't recommend this book highly enough; it is the product of in depth and lengthy research and yet it is still current to the challenges that we face every day in some part of our great country. Chaplin Hicks has taken his many years of experience and scholarly pursuits and really advanced our understanding on why terrorists are religiously motivated; it is the crux of the terrorism problem that we face today!
