Flight Path: Son of Africa to Warrior-Diplomat

ePub Flight Path: Son of Africa to Warrior-Diplomat by Amb Jonathan Scott Gration in History

Description

Muslim Belonging in Secular India surveys the experience of some of India's most prominent Muslim communities in the early postcolonial period. Muslims who remained in India after the Partition of 1947 faced distrust and discrimination; and were consequently compelled to seek new ways of defining their relationship with fellow citizens of India and its governments. Using the forcible integration of the princely state of Hyderabad in 1948 as a case study; Taylor C. Sherman reveals the fragile and contested nature of Muslim belonging in the decade that followed independence. In this context; she demonstrates how Muslim claims to citizenship in Hyderabad contributed to intense debates over the nature of democracy and secularism in independent India. Drawing on detailed new archival research; Dr Sherman provides a thorough and compelling examination of the early governmental policies and popular strategies that have helped to shape the history of Muslims in India since 1947.

Stallard"Flight Path" is the inspiring story of Ambassador Scott Gration's journey to serve others and a cause greater than himself. His "flight path" in life is extraordinary. I enjoyed reading the page-turning accounts of Gration growing up in Africa as the child of missionaries who became a fighter pilot and leader in the U.S. Air Force; a White House fellow; the U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan; and the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya. It was fascinating to read about the events that shaped Gration's character. He shares insights about how to lead and unite people. Thanks to Gration's detailed accounts; I felt the joy of his triumphs and the pain of struggles he faced during times of adversity and disappointment. At the end of the book; I enjoyed reading Gration's reflections about what he's learned from his life's journey.Gration is a thoughtful individual and excellent writer. Anyone will benefit from reading this book. It helps us make sense of our own experiences in life and encourages us to persevere in taking the high road.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A TRUE AMERICAN HEROBy Dave JohnsonThe best book I've read this year and pleased to join the 5 star family. I've recommended the book to all my friends.I endorse all the prior comments so no need to repeat them. What I didn't see in the other comments was the treachery of the politicians and General Gration's inability or conscious disregard to thwart this onslaught. Too bad since if he ran for President in 2016 he could have won.America's loss in Africa's gain.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Book - Just Ordered Another 21 for our Book ClubBy F. Landey PattonThis book is truly compelling; as the life story of Scott Gration is truly remarkable. What was so inspiring is how the basic values that he incorporated in his formative years as the son of missionaries in Africa served him well through the challenges he faced throughout his remarkable career of service to others. At least three or four times his life was in great danger including one time when he was wounded in a terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 18 of his fellow warriors in Saudi Arabia. He's had be privilege of knowing eight Presidents of our country but seems to be more comfortable in the cockpit of one of the many fighter jets he flew as he moved up the ranks to become a commanding general in the air force.
