Florida Slave Narratives: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers' Project 1936-1938

PDF Florida Slave Narratives: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers' Project 1936-1938 by From Brand: Applewood Books in History

Description

According to legend; Lord Nelson disregarded a fatally flawed order to withdraw from a devastating cannon barrage off Copenhagen by monitoring battle signals through a telescope with his blind eye. Instead of retreating; he ordered his ship; HMS Elephant; to hoist the engage-more-closely signal flag; and transformed certain defeat into a mythic triumph for both England and himself. Written by the leading Danish authority on the period; this splendid work brings to life Nelson's historic 1801 victory; immortalized by his famous "turning a blind eye" to his superior's orders. As well as describing the brilliance of the British tactics; the work reveals the desperate action; great bravery; and appalling casualties suffered by the Danish defenders. This fresh perspective is sure to please Nelson enthusiasts and everyone with an interest in the age of sail.

Compelling Stories but...By ScorpioTgrI enjoyed the historical perspective that this book gives; but it's essentially photocopies of the typewritten original pages; which at times are difficult to read. A book set in modern type would have been more enjoyable and informative to read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting perspectivesBy CustomerHighly recommend. These should be used as teaching tools for schools. Shows reality. I chose Florida and Virginia because some of the interviewers were also black; so many of the conversations were more candid.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a must haveBy charvette j smithI love this book; can't put it down. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants 1st hand knowledge from the slave's perspective of what it was like to be enslaved . I live in Jacksonville Florida and some of the locations where the interviews were conducted are close to my area; only everything has been reconstructed but the street names are the same-this is awesome!
