The crowning achievement of one of America’s most distinguished military historians." ―Lincoln Prize juryReaders will find much to debate in this book―including... its affirmation that; because of emancipation; ‘the Civil War calls for a rethinking of the attitude... that war is always futile; that its rewards never match its cost; that any conflict [must be] immediately decisive and virtually without loss of American lives.’" ―Gary W. Gallagher

Was hoping for more details of General Lee and his generalship. The book concentrated on battles and the numerical counts of armies through the progression of the war which I haven't figured why it was included in this book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. information on troop strengths and battles little insight of leeBy donald joullianmostly numerical data on the forces engaged in the battles of the army of northern virginia. This data was valuable to military history;but i felt it lacked information on the battles. its a good book; but i guess i was looking for more personal insight on the relationship between the author and general lee.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It is more than OKBy Gary RembiszThe author was a great admirer of General Lee and rightly so. I saw nothing negative written about Lee. I was hoping to get a more realistic perspective about the "average" officer or soldier's life in the Civil War in the 4 years that Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia.
