A decisive battle between two large galley fleets was expected to decide the fate of the entire Mediterranean basin. In August 1571; an Ottoman fleet of some 235 galleys encountered the slightly smaller Christian fleet of the Holy League. In a five hour melee the Christians inflicted a decisive defeat on the Turks. Lepanto was the last great galley fight of all time and one of the most decisive naval battles in history.

Haunting and PowerfulBy EileenThe stories are utterly haunting and devastating. Comprehending the constant losses the Dildilian family went through and the continual reinventing of themselves is almost too much to truly take in. The author has done a remarkable feat in pulling together the many threads he has inherited into one coherent and poetic tale. Having the record he has provided gives a real look at the lives of his family members; but also gives glimpses into the tragedies of all with genocide survivor family members (and genocide and massacre losses); unimaginable before this book. I loved the threading of past; near past and present. Having Marsoobian's memories intertwined with those of his late mother and the family writings he was able to draw from made the piece feel three-dimensional. Past and present are so beautifully intertwined that it made for a seamless experience. The photos woven throughout made the experience of the book even more powerful. Seeing images of the people and places added immeasurably to the work.
