From Darkness to Dynasty: The First 40 Years of the New England Patriots

ebooks From Darkness to Dynasty: The First 40 Years of the New England Patriots by Jerry Thornton in History

Description

In the late 1960s the New York Rangers transformed from NHL also-rans to Stanley Cup contenders. Gilles Villemure was part of that transformation. The little goaltender had a long wait to make it to the National Hockey League; which had only six teams until after the middle of the decade. Eventually Villemure joined Eddie Giacomin to give the Rangers a strong 1-2 goaltending tandem. The Vezina Trophy–winning twosome was a fixture for the Rangers; threatening to end the franchise’s long Stanley Cup drought; only to come up short. Now; forty years later; Villemure writes about his days with the Rangers in the newly updated Tales from the Rangers Locker Room. Villemure tells stories about old pals like Rod Gilbert; Vic Hadfield; Brad Park; Jean Ratelle—and his boss; Emile “The Cat” Francis. The Rangers finally won that Stanley Cup in 1994; ending over fifty years of frustration; but it was those Francis-led teams—the ones with Villemure and Giacomin in the goal—that brought New York’s Blueshirts; Madison Square Garden’s finest; to the top of the NHL. It is their influence that has continued to propel the Rangers forward even today; with a conference championship win in 2014 and the President’s Trophy in 2015. Fans young and old will want to hear Villemure’s stories come to life. The book is entertaining and a quick read. For that the book gets 5 stars. But the inaccuracies and editing is horrendous. The author states that Lou Saban;who was the first coach of the Patriots; is the father of Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban. That is not true; they are cousins. Another one of the inaccuracies is found when the book talks about the almost hire of Vince Lombardi. When introducing the subject; it is stated that the negotiations began in 1971. 1971? Vince died in August of 1970. Where are the proof readers; and editing? To be fair once you get into the story of Vince Lombardi; it is made clear that the negotiations took place during Super Bowl III in January 1969. During the same story the book also states that Lombardi coached the Washington Redskins for one year (1969) then retired. He didn't retire; he died. For this; I give the book 1 star. I wanted to love this book; and like was stated earlier; I found the book a fun and quick read. But could never really trust what I was reading; when the things I know are correct; are wrong in the book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Must read if Patriots and/pro football fanBy HistoryReaderAs a life long Patriots fan which spans over 50 years this was a great read! Brought back all the wonderfully awful memories of the years gone by. I try to tell folks that give me a hard time about being a Pats fan that I earned it after all the incredible stupidity and suffering.Great Job here Jerry!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Patriots Fans: Get this book NOWBy AnonymousIf you are a Patriots consider this required reading. Even though Jerry is a whole generation older than myself his cultural references are still relevant. Reading this book feels like you are in a dive bar and and old timer is telling you about the history of Patriots lore. I cannot recommend this book enough for fellow Patriots fans; particularly younger fans who don't have much sense of history of the team.
