For Uniform Research; a Must HaveBy Jeffery BerryFor those of us sharing the arcane hobby of Napoleonia; this book; as well as the other volumes of this estimable series; are invaluable. The presentation of uniforms of every regiment of every army in the 1807 campaign is a gold mine. The orders of battle for each phase of the campaign are pretty good. The art direction is fun and exuberant while being useful. There are certainly better sources for detailed narrative and analysis of the campaign; and; like another reviewer; I was disappointed in the quality of the translation (I; too; would have been satisfied to have it in the original French); but it is nonetheless an indispensable book to have in any library of military history.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. C'est Magnifique!By danny boyThis series of very colourfully illustrated books on the major Napoleonic campaigns are a feast for the eyes. There are numerous line illustrations of uniforms of all the participants; backed by clear schematic maps and further amplified with drawings and paintings from the period. All glorious stuff. It matters a little that the translation is not perfect; but at least; I can read and understand most of it.Definitely a plus from me as; previously; this type of spectacular books were always done in the French vernacular; which was extremely irritating.15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Great resourceBy Colin PlattFrom Eylau to Friedland is a wonderful book for those interested either in these rather obscure Napoleonic battles; or in the uniforms of the combatants. As others have noted; the translation from the French can be a bit trying at times; but either they are getting better or I'm getting used to it; as it doesn't seem so bad in this book (I also have the Austerlitz; Jena; and Borodino books in the series). The text gives a broad overview of the battles; and some excellent information on the order of battle. Uniform plates are included for French; Prussian and Russian armies; but also there are some for the Bavarians;Wurtzburg and Wurtemburg; the Duchies of Baden and Hesse; Italy; Belgium; Poland and Burg; as well as the Dutch. If you are looking for the uniform of a specific regiment; it is probably best to look at the book prior to puchase as the uniforms shown; while extensive; are only a representation and not the whole. The reproduction in colour of many period paintings is also a very welcome insight to the times. The maps; while not in 3D as some are being done now; are wonderful; and a real strenght of the book. Overall; the book can be recommended as an introduction to these important battles; or for hobbyists with an interest in Napoleonic uniforms.
