General History of the Robberies Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates

PDF General History of the Robberies Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates by Charles Captain Johnson in History

Description

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was an African American civil rights activist; leader; Pan-Africanist; sociologist; educator; historian; writer; editor; poet; and scholar. The importance of his work to the success of the Civil Rights movement cannot be overestimated. "In the course of his long; turbulent career; W. E. B. Du Bois attempted virtually every possible solution to the problem of twentieth-century racism-scholarship; propaganda; integration; national self-determination; human rights; cultural and economic separatism; politics; international communism; expatriation; third world solidarity." -David Levering Lewis The Souls of Black Folk propelled Du Bois to the forefront of the Civil Rights movement when it was first published. This hard hitting masterpiece is part essays; part memoir; and part fiction. More than any other book it brought home just how racist and unjust America could be; and demanded that African Americans be granted access to education and equality.

Interesting and invigoratingBy Earnest SludgeMy copy was the Carroll Graf edition. It was interesting to see how the pirates differed in their treatment of prisoners. Some of them were very cruel. It was also interesting to learn of the common practice of hanging the corpses of the executed pirates up in chains for public views for years after - it was also called being "sun dried".This edition had a number of typos; not real bad; but enough. Compounding the problem is Defoe puts a comma or semi-colon after every four or five words. Some Defoe's writing seemed like a hurried knock-off from newspaper accounts in some parts. Other parts seem so hurried that it's impossible to follow. The referents are hopelessly confused; you can't tell who did what. Add to that the convoluted way upper class people were beginning to express themselves; and the author just general assumes an archaic mentality and you could be scratching your head for days. This could be dealt with by annotating. Fortunately these incomprehensible passages are relatively few.Obviously an indispensable classic for the pirate fan.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is fantasticBy LarryThis book was orginally published in the year of Our Lord; 1726. It is from THIS BOOK that almost all pyrate information is gleaned from. How its written; "Captain Johnson" was there; in person with most of the pirates as they did their dasterdedly deeds. Like (And I quote) "Captain Blackbeard; him also known as Edward Teach or Thatch would spend all night fornicating with his 16 year old wife. Then in the morning before sailing his top officers- some 6 of them- would fornicate with his wife before sailing". Shocking that such details would be given in a book published at this time.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great historic readBy JakeIf you can get past the old tyme speak and phrases in this book; its a fantastic account of piracy and legendary buccaneers as seen from a true first hand account. Its a reprint of an original book published in the early 1700s. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as any history buff truly would.
