I would like to see some well-versed American Revolution Re-enactor or some professional soldier/scholar write something new. Notwithstanding; this is a fine treatment of a soldier who would have been a real game-changer had he not been KIA so early in the war. Have no doubt: This man was head and shoulders above the other professional British Army officers who joined the Patriot Cause. Only General Nathaniel Greene and the General whose name we in America do not mention equal him as an operational commander capable of handling and deploying larger troop formations. Generals Greene and Montgomery compare favorably with the best operational commanders on the Redcoat side; Lord Cornwallis and the Hessian General Knyphausen. This is no "Parson Weems" biography; but neither is it a 21st Century close examination of facts and figures and details. I recommend for any private person's collection of American Revolution books...until something better comes along. He was a solid Whig in UK politics before coming to North AMerica; and that got him passed over for promotion. He was already sympathetic to the idea of American independence; and we are darn lucky that this fine officer joined our Cause. The Osprey publishing "Quebec 1775" compelments of reading of this bio very nicely.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well written and well doneBy Kieran O'KeefeShelton covers Montgomery's life; an officer who is often overlooked because of his untimely death. The book is relatively short; and an easy read; but it is very informative and interesting.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Superb biographyBy CustomerI read this book during a recent Master's Degree course. This is not a typical textbook reading! This is a refreshing biography of a forgotten American Revolution general. What makes the character even more elusive to historical review is that he fought and died early in the war for independence. The author tells the story of Montgomery's life in a readable style. Through the process; the reader gains a better understanding of the early battles of the Revolution. In addition; the reader gains perspective on the dark character of Benedict Arnold. Great book...easy read...anyone interested in leadership; American Generals; or the revolution will enjoy it.
