A specialist's view...By HMS Warspite"General Washington's Army (1) 1775-78" is an Osprey Men-at-Arms Series book focused on the many uniforms worn by the components of the Continental Army in its early years. As might be expected for an army that started essentially from scratch; there is considerable variety. Most militia and state-raised units came with their own uniforms. Some units and many individuals started in civilian clothes. It took a while for the Army's quartermaster system to catch up with the requirements to clothe Washington's army in standard uniforms.Author Marko Zlatich comes to the task with considerable apparent background on the topic from the Smithsonian. His narrative is highly detailed; perhaps too much so for the general reader. The reader with background in the topic and the period can read back through the text to some interesting insights on the logistics of the period. The color plates and other accompanying illustrations are excellent. Recommended as a good introduction to the topic.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I like it; but...By Robert T. M.This is one of what I must call a series of monographs on British American armies. There is a lot of good information in each book; and there are some useful sketches as well. That's on the positive side.On the negative side; These books are very slow reading. (even difficult) There is an overuse of compound sentences to the point where I am having to constantly go back and reread numerous sections just to fully understand what what is being said. To a small extent; I would almost call it rambling; as if the author is sitting down at a table and "discussing" it; rather than teaching it as a lecturer.All-in-all; however; I would buy this again. Once read; it is a good reference to go back to.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Uniforms of the Continental ArmyBy Keith C.Good book for what it is - a study of uniforms based upon primary sources with some photos of artifacts and color plates. It is not a text on the army as a whole
