Genesis Unbound: A Provocative New Look at the Creation Account

ePub Genesis Unbound: A Provocative New Look at the Creation Account by John H Sailhamer in History

Description

Remembering Dvinsk is a compilation of three sources. First is a reprint of the 1965 book Dvinsk - The Rise and Decline of a Town by Yudel Flior; translated from the Yiddish by Bernard Sachs. Second is the translation of the 1975 class project In Memory of the Community of Dvinsk; to memorialize the Latvian town of Dvinsk by the 8th grade of the Kol Haverim Junior High School of Haifa; it is a fine collection of history; recollections of former residents; essays; historic photographs; and artwork by the students. Third is an appendix of historic photographs assembled by Eilat Gordin Levitan. It is the desire of the Yizkor-Books-In-Print project of JewishGen.org that this new compilation of material in English serve as a fitting memorial for the Jewish Community of Dvinsk. Needs more support.By Jeremy Myers - Writing at RedeemingGodOverall; I really liked the general approach that Sailhamer took in this book; but I think it had serious exegetical flaws. His case could have been greatly strengthened if he had backed up his ideas with further footnotes from other sources. For example; when he says that no serious scholars think that Moses was writing a polemic against the mythical creation accounts of his day (p. 88); he cites one scholarly work from 1989. In my own studies; I have encountered dozens of leading world class scholars who have written more recently on the subject who disagree (Gordon Johnston; for example). Also; though I was intrigued by his idea that the "land" of Genesis 1 was primarily the "Promised Land;" I was not fully convinced; and did not see how this ended up making sense of Genesis 1. I do think there are word plays on "the land" in Genesis 1 and the Promised Land in the rest of the Pentateuch; but I don't think we can say that "the land" of Genesis 1 IS the Promised Land. There were other similar concerns with the book. All in all; Sailhamer has some great ideas; but in my opinion; they needed further refinement and support.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommend this bookBy Dennis Y.
