When a grad student told me about this work I was happy to see something new on the development of German immigrant attitudes towards race over time. I was thrilled to find that the book addressed a number of questions I had formulated in my own research. This is the rare book that can transform the way you think about a subject. I enjoyed it and I recommend it highly to anyone interested in the politics and culture of the German community in the United States during the Civil War Era.
