Winston Churchill himself admitted as much when; after the war; he revealed that the U-Boat menace was the only thing that had really caused him to fear that Great Britain would lose the war against Germany. Had this happened; the Allies would have been deprived of Great Britain as a base from which to launch operations against the Third Reich; and the invasion of German-occupied Europe would probably never have taken place.German U-Boat technology; training; tactics; and combat successes far exceeded those of any of the other combatant nations; and even as the Third Reich was crumbling; technically advanced vessels such as the Type XXI; many years ahead of its time; were being put into volume production.The U-Boat campaign; particularly in the North Atlantic; was the Kriegsmarine's most potent threat to the Allies at sea; but it was carried out at a great cost to those who commanded and crewed the submarines. This is an impressive book that not only adds considerably to our understanding of a crucially important campaign of World War II but through the use of personal photographs; the reader gets a deeper appreciation of what a U-Boat crew experienced in the ebb and flow of the Battle of the Atlantic. There are some mistakes and clarifications from the translation of French into English and they are listed below:*Page 20-In one of the photographs; bjamed should be spelled as blamed.*Page 28-Salerno; Florida had its name changed in 1965 to Port Salerno by the city council to differentiate it from the Italian city of Salerno.*Page 48-You don't hand out awards; you are decorated and you also don't "win" decorations as well. war correspondent should be written as War Correspondent*Page 49-marines should be written as Marines.*Page 54-The USS Core (CVE-13) was a Bogue-class escort carrier not an aircraft carrier.*Page 56-The USS Card (CVE-11) was a Bogue-class escort carrier not an aircraft carrier.*Page 58-war correspondent should be written as War Correspondent.*Page 61-affected should read as transferred.*Page 72-handing out should read as awarding.*Page 73-war correspondent should be written as War Correspondent and June 1944 should be written as June; 1944.*Page 74-The photograph of the Sunderland aircraft is actually a Short Sunderland S.25 Mark V.*Page 77-Asdic stands for Anti-Submarine Detection Investigation Committee.*Page 80-marines should be written as Marines.Lt.
