William Shea offers a gripping narrative of the events surrounding Prairie Grove; Arkansas; one of the great unsung battles of the Civil War that effectively ended Confederate offensive operations west of the Mississippi River. Shea provides a colorful account of a grueling campaign that lasted five months and covered hundreds of miles of rugged Ozark terrain. In a fascinating analysis of the personal; geographical; and strategic elements that led to the fateful clash in northwest Arkansas; he describes a campaign notable for rapid marching; bold movements; hard fighting; and the most remarkable raid of the Civil War.

You see segments of maps from afar; so that you may have an overview and a list of maps to research further; but not maps to study. I don't see a review mentioning that.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. MapsBy the eternal answering machineMy wife gave this to me as a birthday gift; knowing I like to look at maps. There are some amazing ones here. What I like best about it; though; is that on the page after each map; there's a close up of various points and explanations of what you're looking at. The maps progress historically; and they are from cultures throughout the world.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. He and his father seemed to think it was quite nice! It's a nice historical overview of mapsBy Jen S.I got this for a friend's kid who loves maps. He and his father seemed to think it was quite nice! It's a nice historical overview of maps. Would make for an interesting coffee table book; too; I think!
