Heroes for All Time: Connecticut Civil War Soldiers Tell Their Stories (The Driftless Connecticut Series Garnet Books)

DOC Heroes for All Time: Connecticut Civil War Soldiers Tell Their Stories (The Driftless Connecticut Series Garnet Books) by Dione Longley; Buck Zaidel in History

Description

An unprecedented contribution to the field of Civil War history; Voices from Company D collects writings from the diaries of eight members of the Greensboro Guards; Fifth Alabama Infantry Regiment. Woven into a single chronological narrative; these writings provide a unique perspective not only on many of the war's battles and campaigns but also on aspects of life and culture in the nineteenth-century South; including friendship and kinship; duty and honor; and commitment and sacrifice. As part of the Army of Northern Virginia; the Guards marched under Stonewall Jackson and Jubal Early and fought throughout the war in such battles as Seven Pines; Chancellorsville; Gettysburg; Spotsylvania; and finally Petersburg; where all but one of the Guards were captured.Readers will find singular descriptions of the towns and countryside the men saw; of battlefields and camps; of civilians caught in the path of the war. The diarists also commented on such topics as politics; religion; the home front; the presence of slaves alongside the troops; prices and inflation; troop morale; and leisure activities from reading to gambling. While the diaries impart a wealth of information about critical military engagements; they also convey the full range of the wartime experience: from terror to boredom; pride to regret; victory to defeat.

Bringing voices back to lifeBy Emma ValentineLongley and Zaidel bring the faces and voices of our Connecticut Civil War soldiers and their families back to life. The text is addicting. The images and captions remarkable. Reading this book makes one understand the sacrifices of soldiers and families alike (whether from 150 years ago or from today).Reading the chapter on Antietem before revisiting that battlefield gave me an entirely different experience. This is a must read for any Civil War or military history buff.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A terrific account of the Civil WarBy megan rohanA terrific account of the Civil War. I felt a lump in my throat as newly minted soldiers marched off with patriotic fervor; and then again as realization dawned moments from their first battle where death lurked. GULP!The authors weave the stories with photos; new articles; and actual letters from the soldiers that endear them to you not as characters in a book; but as people you know. As the stock guy at your grocery store. As the 15 year old who mows your lawn. Or as a family member of your own. Well done!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
