Hiding in the Open: Purchased at .comBy depThis is the story of Sabina Zimering and her younger sister Helka; two teenage Jewish girls who survived the war living on forged documents. Their younger brother Natek also survived the war. Sadly; their parents did not. The book describes how Sabina and her family escaped the ghetto of Piotrkow; Poland right before the Germans liquidated it in 1942. The family split up so it would be easier to survive. Only a few people would help the girls; and after a while of literally hiding in the open; they decided to volunteer for forced labor in Germany. I found this to be a wonderful book; it really gives a clear picture of working in Germany during the war and the constant danger the girls were in. I was also pleased that the story didn't end with the war; but continues on into the United States and their lives afterward. I think the book could have used a bit of editing; but in a way it seems more realistic because English wasn't Sabina's first language. A great read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
