Description

Early Hispanic Colorado 1678-1900 adds to our national story; sharing the history of early Hispanics from both Mexico and Spain as well as regional Native American tribes. The early history of Hispanic Colorado recognizes a people who have heroically survived nearly two hundred years of accelerated cultural change; beginning in 1848. It is about a people who successfully learned to navigate the legal systems of Spain; Mexico; and the United States in order to retain their lands and their values. This study places the history of expeditions led by Juan María Antonio Rivera; Franciscan friars Domínguez and Escalante; Governor Juan Bautista de Anza; José María de Arce and early Hispanic New Mexican traders in perspective.Their efforts led to the Hispanic settlement of southern Colorado - a significant chapter in both regional and national history.

My books contained mostly names; dates and a few photographs. They are reference books rather than a family history story. I have been trying to come up with a format that would be read from cover to cover.I ran across a review of this book on Eastman's genealogy web site and ordered it immediately. I was not disappointed. I love the story format which is interspersed with photographs and scans of original documents. The author did an excellent job in producing a very readable family history with well documented facts. As a bonus; the Schlichting family took the same route of immigration as my family did. From Germany to Minnesota.I highly recommend this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Missing links for my ancestryBy CustomerI grew up knowing the Schlichting family in southern Minnesota very well. The common link was that my maternal grandparents knew the Schlichtings well in Wabasa county before their move to Mower County. I was particularly impressed with historical information about Germany before the Schlichtings emigrated. Well worth the read for any German genealogist.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting facts of WWIIBy Donald J. KruegerInteresting read. Mainly facts. Would purchase again.
