They did it for the flagBy David WarrenAuthor Sgt E J Hart was a member of the Fortieth Illinois Inf from it's inception in 1861 until 1864 when his enlistment was up. Many in the regiment reinlisted at that point and served until the end of the war. Sgt Hart did not detail blood and guts and had no damsels in distress. His accounts of the daily lives of the men and the conditions they overcsme in order to serve their country provided insight into the lives of those men and of my g-g-grandfather; a member of this regiment.
