John Lewis fought for Virginia in the Confederate army at Malvern Hill; Antietam; and elsewhere. But it was at Gettysburg that the most searing experience of his wartime career took place. He charged with Pickett's Division behind General Lewis Armistead across that now-fabled field towards the center of the Union line. With great pride and seemingly no lasting bitterness; John Lewis recalls that fateful day and all his other days in a butternut uniform. But it's not all blood and glory. Lewis had a wry sense of humor and used it to twit both the Blue and the Gray in this wonderful small memoir of a Johnnie from Virginia. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever.

It's more cliff notes; which is fine as an intro.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Doesn't go into deep enough detailBy reviewerA very broad look at these generals and their tactics. I was expecting maps and in depth step by step analysis of key battles but none of this was in here. The author would spend a couple sentences or at most a paragraph or two on MAJOR battles. Read Wikipedia articles and you will get better analysis of these generals. Thoroughly let down. No maps!? Come on!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. InterestingBy Kindle CustomerGood facts about battles and personal accomplishmemts. Good information for military history class. Other generals I would have included. But overall old book.
