This highly informative book begins with an examination of the background to Germany’s primary military objectives in relation to the western end of their self-styled ‘Fortress Europe’ including the early foundation of shore defenses in northern France. In 1941; there was a switch in emphasis of the Atlantic Wall’s role from attack to defense. Beach defenses became more elaborate and the Nazi-controlled Todt Organization began a massive building program constructing new bunkers and reinforcing existing sites; using forced labor.Hitler appointed Rommel to formulate Germany’s anti-invasion plans in early 1944. At the same time the Allies were making extensive studies of the fortifications and preparing for the challenge of overcoming this most formidable of obstacles.Using; in many cases; previously unpublished accounts of the soldiers on the ground this book follows Britain’s 79th Armored Division; Sir Percy Hobart’s ‘Funnies’; as they utilized their unique weaponry in support of Allied efforts to ensure the success of the invasion. The author draws on British; American; Canadian and German sources.Hitler’s Atlantic Wall – Normandy also includes information on war cemeteries along with travel information and accommodation suggestions and a guide to the relevant museums.

It is a well researched and very detailed book about the Naval Bases of the Kriegsmarine during World War 2. It tells about all the different kinds of bases; describes the history of the bigger bases used by the Kriegsmarine and also about the staff and sailors working there and life on the base. There are also lots of details about the different coastal artillery used and about the men manning it. A very unique book and recommended for readers that want to find out more about the "land" side of Hitler's navy.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Ron McDonaldEXCELLENT6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Great bookBy scott baileyA well written book that covers everything on naval bases for the German. This book covers all the extras not found in any other book. The locations of every naval station and unit assigned to it is listed. This book also covers German term used by the navy and has an interesting section on life at the base and normal routines used; plus naval regulation are discussed as well. I found the most interesting by far is the amount of flak units used by the navy.
