The Bodhicaryavatara is one of the best-loved Buddhist texts. It tells of a noble ideal: a compassionate life lived for the well-being of the world. Through his uplifting verses; Santideva; the eighth-century monk and poet; outlines the training undertaken by one wishing to follow his vision - a path of selflessness which is much needed today. This is the first hardback edition of the translation by Kate Crosby and Andrew Skilton; with clear explanatory notes and an introduction by Paul Williams.

Lee ignored the obvious strategy when outnumbered 4-to-1 and having only to defend Southern borders to win independence. Simply being outnumbered did not mean the South could not win. Instead; Lee bled his army with head-on charges; capped off by Picket's Charge at Gettysburg. By 1864 and 1865 he had destroyed his army. After the war; generals with less than stellar records deified Lee so they'd appear better in his celestial light. As a theater commander; says the author; Lee ignored the West even while acting as military advisor for President Davis; and even tried to siphon off troops for Virginia as the Federals advanced along the Mississippi. In the end; Sherman swept through Georgia and Carolina and up to threaten his army in Virginia; along with Grant. The author's own observations are backed up by criticisms for Longstreet; who was thrown under the bus post-war by lesser generals covering themselves; and by Porter; the commander of the Confederate artillery at Gettysburg and many other battlefields. Even if some allegations are regarded as unsurprising mistakes or nitpicking; the overwhelming amount of objections raised by Bonekemper makes his case. It should either be fixed or removed from the eBook offerings. Anyone buying this Kindle Edition should be given a refund. Multi page footnotes routinely pop up in the middle of sentences and even in the middle of words. One of the potentially most interesting documents; Lee's U. S. Army letter of resignation; appears as a meaningless tangle of symbols; letters and other characters; totally unintelligible. While the book is readable; the formatting is a constant annoyance.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book destroying the myth of Lee's strategic and tactical genius.By CustomerHowever Lee's failure was that of Davis and his administration as well. There did not appear to be an effective strategy for prosecuting the war. In that vein they all were guilty. Lee's provincial attitudes; aggressive tendencies and failure to know when he was beaten caused the war to extend much longer than feasible. This kindle Book was well written but poorly edited. When quoting a source it was sometimes difficult to determine where the quote ended and the author was continuing his own narrative since the author did not use quotations or effectively isolate the quoted text.
