From a motley crew of different American immigrants; we see the drama and lives of different peoples who come to America to become Americans. We hear the voices of John Harrower; an indentured servant in Revolutionary America; the Seyyfardts; who migrate to 1850s Michigan; Rosa Cassettari; an early 20th century Italian immigrant who wants to go back home; and the Nguyens; Vietnamese War refugees granted a safe haven to live in America. These different stories all show us what type of people come to America; the reason why they come; and the reasons why they leave their original countries. It also gives insight into the reader's own personal identity; and what it means to be American. Dublin's book also presents the underlying; similar characteristics of all immigrants to America. Highly recommended.
