Kind of sketchy; even for Osprey VanguardBy RSI originally intended to buy both of the Japanese destroyer books; but after reading this one; I won't get the second. Granted; the Vanguard series aren't expected to be in depth studies; but this one was exceptionally brief. Brief coverage of torpedoes and guns; but no description at all of sonar suites. After reading the entire book I could easily assume these Japanese destroyers had no sonar equipment at all. When the author makes the point more than once that most of their losses were to submarines; I would think the topic deserves some mention.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Long Awaited Publishing!By R. Douglas JohnsonThis first of two part study of Imperial Japanese Destroyers was long overdue and much needed for any student of the WWII IJN DestroyerAs with most Osprey books this edition contains a lot of useful information in a small package. A general look at the factors influencing destroyer design as well as weapon systems used on these ships starts the book off. The balance of the book covers the earlier classes of destroyers; war refits and a short history of each ship of the class. This book is of immense value just for this alone! Since it is a fairly small work if the reader is looking for the depth of detail contained in Lacroix and Wells' work on Japanese WWII cruisers you may be disappointed though. For any reader who studies this period this is a valuable and much needed work in English is a necessity. For those who have read Hara's "Japanese Destroyer Captain" this work will provide a visual context to much of what author wrote about.I eagerly await the publication of the second part of this work!!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good; concise; could be better detailed.By Charles StuckeyCovers the development of IJN DDs from the earliest days of their conceptualization as torpedo platforms to the late pre-war classes. Covers the deployment and actions of each ship individually; but only covers the final upgrades and conversions in most cases. I would have preferred more info on when what modifications and additions were completed; but info may be scarce or lost. Overall this is an excellent brief and concise guide to the older destroyer classes of the WWII IJN. A little more on some of the battles they fought would have been nice; but space limits probably prevented it. Does list how where and when each was sunk and operations it participated in; so hopefully the second in the series will bring more detail to the wins and losses that these ships contributed to. Still; a good source of basic and concise info on the subject.
