Most of what we know of American history is second-hand (or much more removed from the source); passed down as popular cultural legend or by field experts via textbooks in public school. But it's like anything else: when you go back to the source and get the real story; things are often surprisingly different from what you thought. That's how it is with David Bercot's book In God We Don't Trust. His research of original documents sets straight many misunderstandings I had of the founding of America. Many of us no doubt already suspect that much popular history must be PR by the winners. While this perspective can often lead people to be cynical about everything; instead I encourage people to simply have a healthy skepticism of what *anyone* says and simply check it against the truth. If my daughter told me that her brother said this or that; I should ask her brother directly if he indeed said it - we all know this as a simple; common sense practice. It should be no different with history. We should check what we learn against the actual recorded sayings of those who said it... and that's what David Bercot does; as he does with all his researched writings. I think you will be surprised; sometimes outraged; often moved; and most of all relieved that you know the real story. It will give you a different perspective on what America and its economy are built on; on certain people groups; and most of all how spiritual (or "Christian") the founding fathers were - or were not - and how the impact of that today. When I saw American missionary friends send their own children as combatants into wars in Irak or Afghanistan; I have always been wondering how they could reconcile this with the example of Jesus' life.Most Christian books about the founding of the USA tend to gloss over the evils of the revolution; but David Bercot is brutally honest in telling what happened; and how Christians justified its violence and injustices. - It is shocking how un-Christlike many behaviors and policies of Pilgrims; Puritans; preachers and founders were. A bright light and contrast is told in the history of the founding of Pennsylvania by peaceful Christians; which shows how the States could have been established while fully trusting in God; without genocide; rebellion and wars.The book describes the overwhelmingly 'Christian' roots of the USA; but based on a worldly Christianity; mixed up with political power; humanism and economic greed. Helping untangle Christian and American idealsBy CustomerBercot's book offers a refreshing critique of the American ideal of independence and shows how much of the American narrative and history has not been in accordance with Biblical teaching. This is a great book for every American to read; Christian and non-Christian alike. It may also help those who are not Americans to disentangle the teachings of Christianity from the assertions of Americans who follow the American ideals. True; the US has embraced some Christians ideals such as concepts of human equality and human rights; but the historical practices of using violence to secure independence or of armed rebellion against government are incompatible with biblical instruction.
