It's not a page turner but it is very interesting and gave great context to what I saw in my visit. Ireland is deeply rich in culture and heritage; and this book gave me a lot of color during my visit. Still; you really have to be there to wrap your head around the megalithic tomb at Newgrange and the impact of the Vikings on Dublin. Definitely worth the read if you're a history geek.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very Helpful and Alive DiscussionBy PammieA very helpful and alive discussion of basic general misunderstandings of early Irish history (e.g. Later arrival of Celts; and their gradual and peaceful arrival in Ireland). Brings matters up to date by introducing current Irish historians and cultural experts; and taking the reader on actual treks to the key ancient sites.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely fascinating!By M RyanAbsolutely fascinating. The historic struggles and incredible successes of the Irish for centuries before the assertion of England over Ireland makes for superb reading. Particularly intriguing is the way ancient beliefs and sacred places retained their status as kingships and governance changed through time. The Irish really did save civilization-- what a tragedy that a truely foreign system was imposed over a very functional one. But; that's history everywhere; isn't it.
