Independent Immigrants: A Settlement of Hanoverian Germans in Western Missouri

ebooks Independent Immigrants: A Settlement of Hanoverian Germans in Western Missouri by Robert W. Frizzell in History

Description

Unlike most books on slavery in the Americas; this social history of Africans and their enslaved descendants in colonial Costa Rica recounts the journey of specific people from West Africa to the New World. Tracing the experiences of Africans on two Danish slave ships that arrived in Costa Rica in 1710; the Christianus Quintus and Fredericus Quartus; the author examines slavery in Costa Rica from 1600 to 1750. Lohse looks at the ethnic origins of the Africans and narrates their capture and transport to the coast; their embarkation and passage; and finally their acculturation to slavery and their lives as slaves in Costa Rica. Following the experiences of girls and boys; women and men; he shows how the conditions of slavery in a unique local setting determined the constraints that slaves faced and how they responded to their condition.

It is particularly interesting since the author compares families' experiences in Missouri to their status in Germany prior to leaving. Lots of Civil War skirmishes in the area that were carefully documented using available information. This is well worth reading if you are of German descent; from Lafayette County (Concordia area); Missouri; or ever attended SPC there.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. lafayette germansBy ozarkdocI found this account fascinating; being a sixth generation Lafayette County descendent myself. I found this a very vibrant; engaging account of the pioneer experience of old world immigrants on the then frontier of the US as well as their battles with the surrounding slave holding society. I think the Rev Biltz' memoirs will be another powerfully enlightening book if they are ever published. My hat off to the author!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good study of this subjectBy WJ FI have a personal reason for acquiring this book in that many of the people referenced in it are my family that immigrated from Germany. Well researched.
