Book's original write-up says "four husbands and 7 children" but Elizabeth Fones had 3 husbands 8 children. Nevertheless; having read the historical novel; Anya Seton's "The Winthrop Woman;" it is good to see this book's many footnotes and extended bibliography. Descendants of this lady will be pleased to read of Hallett Epilogue. URLs are even listed for further research. It is unfortunate that the title does not mention Winthrop; there are many others (besides myself) that follow any publications mentioning this family. As I'm a direct descendent (through Hannah); I had an interest in understanding the challenges she faced -- maybe not so different than those we face today in a fast-changing world! I could easily locate all of the places mentioned in Ct; NY; Ma; RI and was fascinated by the stories of the Native Americans and their dealings with the settlers from Europe. I finished Seton's The Winthrop Woman several months ago; which was well-researched but took a considerable amount of liberties with a few historically important items. It colored my impressions of the people involved. That's the deal with historical novels. This book is nonfiction; and I actually enjoyed it quite a lot more. The writing in places is excellent; but occasionally gets a little worn. The author has an exceptional eye for detail; though; so the reading is overall very lively. It shows the people involved in this fascinating period of history warts and all; but with compassion and warmth; This is a good resource. .
