Any book that is well researched; informative and provides sources / references tends to be this way. I find that it gives the book some degree of credibility; as if someone actually spend a lot of time and effort researching this topic. This is a good book to begin understanding Russian organized crime. Serio's professional background gives him much more authority on this topic than any other author I have found. A very good place to start if you are looking to expand your knowledge. Pay the extra money for real work; and get a "real" resource.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Bonnie Lowe Welsh; Law Enforcement Advisor; KyrgyzstanBy Bonnie L. WelshThis book has helped me tremendously in conducting my current mission as a law enforcement advisor in the former Soviet Republic of Kyrgystan. I could not put the book down because Joe Serio explains exactly how the culture developed; and how the mentality remains until this day. It was uncanny the way he captured my experiences in dealing with corruption in Central Asia. I'm a 30 year veteran of policing on the East Coast; and I would highly recommend this book as a law enforcement guide; as well as a political science reference book. I can't wait until the next book is published.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting read but by no means a "can't put it down" kind of bookBy SamiamsglockRead more like a college text book then your typical true crime book. Liked the fact that the author used traditional research techniques to explore and critique other author's work on the subject. Made sure to downplay all the media hype and explained how misused the word "mafia" is in Eastern European context.
