DupreyFor such a short book; this was an interesting read. The most fascinating part of Trumbull's life was his early years; beginning with his birth at the "Witching Hour" in England. From the book; you get the picture that Trumbull was a brave and capable officer prevented by politics from rising to his full potential. In the end; he was relegated to the backwater of the Civil War having to deal with the less cut and dry issues of the Civil War.For anyone interested in Iowa during the Civil War; this is worth the read. I never realized that not everyone in Iowa supported the War. You often hear about Missouri having divided loyalties; but not in a state as north as Iowa.Trumbull's post-war career is also interesting as is some of the writings included in the book on the Labor movement.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great BookBy MarieGeneral Trumbull was my husband's ancestor; so this book was a wonderful find. His strong political principles and eloquence are evident in his descendents. No doubt he would be pleased about that.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Iowa's Forgotten General: Matthew Mark TrumbullBy WheelbarrowExcellent book about a brave and fascinating man; one of the forgotten heroes of Shiloh and other battles. This is a true story of someone who sought the American dream; found it; and lived it fully.
