Islam: Faith; Culture; History

audiobook Islam: Faith; Culture; History by Paul Lunde in History

Description

When Europe introduced mechanisms to control New World territories; resources and populations; women-whether African; indigenous; mixed race; or European-responded and participated in multiple ways. By adopting a comprehensive view of female agency; the essays in this collection reveal the varied implications of women's experiences in colonialism in North and South America. Although the Spanish American context receives particular attention here; the volume contrasts the context of both colonial Mexico and Peru to every other major geographic region that became a focus of European imperialism in the early modern period: the Caribbean; Brazil; English America; and New France. The chapters provide a coherent perspective on the comparative history of European colonialism in the Americas through their united treatment of four central themes: the gendered implications of life on colonial frontiers; non-European women's relationships to Christian institutions; the implications of race-mixing; and social networks established by women of various ethnicities in the colonial context. This volume adds a new dimension to current scholarship in Atlantic history through its emphasis on culture; gender and race; and through its explicit effort to link religion to the broader imperial framework of economic extraction and political domination.

Must for the home library.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An AWAIR Pick!!!By Audrey ShabbasThis succinct volume is one of the most satisfying of the many introductory books on Islam. It is rich in facts; which are thoroughly set in the context of Muslim and western viewpoints. The graphic presentation uses abundant; carefully captioned photographs and historical art reproductions; topical sidebars and 60 pages of country statistics and 15 pages of chronology! This book is done in Dorling-Kindersley's signature style; designed to serve the contemporary reader-in-a-hurry.It works well for author Lunde; himself a scholar of East-West history; versed in classical Arabic texts as well as in those of the West. He presents facts as a means to understanding of history's flow; and his passion for the broad view is matched by his compassion for the newcomer to the sujbect. You will not fine here any dull litany of unpronounceable names. Always aware of Islamic history's countless connections with the West; Lunde presents the subject with its full due of vitality and relevance. Chapters cover the present-day relationships among Islamic and western cultures; the history of the faith; and empire-by-empire history of Islamic politics; arts and sciences; and the varied experiences of modernity.Teachers/Librarians: 7th grade to adult - Social Studies. If you have room for only one reference work on Islam; make it this one!!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Concise; yet powerfulBy Tarek Mak.This is a most excellent introduction/resource on Islam. It is superbly written; Lunde is never boring; always informative and treats matters with due respect and a deep understanding. The book has an attractive page layout; with images that are relevant and increase the readers understanding and insight into Islam and Muslims.I am amazed at how much information has been packed into this small volume. The book is divided into two main parts; the first is a brief yet very deep overview of Islam. It covers topics such as Islamic beliefs; practices and the Qur'an. A quick but concentrated tour of Islamic history (till modern times) and Muslims contribution to art and science. Issues of modernity are also treated with wisdom and sensitivity. The second part is a reference of Muslim countries (countries with Muslim majorities). The use of graphical layout and icons allows for a vast amount of information to be presented. Information on education; media; defence; economics; resources; politics; currency; important dates. It has Flags; maps; weakness and strengths ... and the list goes on.
