Pittsburgh toilet; squeaky cheese; city chicken; shampoo banana; and Chevy in the Hole are all phrases that are familiar to Midwesterners but sound foreign to anyone living outside the region. This book explains not only what Midwesterners say but also how and why they say it and covers such topics as: the causes of the Northern cities vowel shift; why the accents in Fargo miss the nasality that's a hallmark of Minnesota speech; and why Chicagoans talk more like people from Buffalo than their next-door neighbors in Wisconsin. Readers from the Midwest will have a better understanding of why they talk the way they do; and readers who are not from the Midwest will know exactly what to say the next time someone ends a sentence with "eh?".

SurbeckSo many books; so little time… And some are indeed good; while some others are not worth much; but once in a while a really impressive one comes up. Such is the case of “Israel-Palestine for Critical Thinkers†here. I am very impressed by the pedagogically superb way the author has managed to parcel out the entire history of this complicated part of the world in very digestible portions; with ample illustrations and many maps; making it a pleasure to read and learn.One example: in all the books I’ve seen so far on the history of the Middle East; hardly any provides an intelligible map that explains what were the respective views (and territorial ambitions) of Hussain Ibn Ali; the Sheriff of Mecca; and the British representative McMahon when they discussed how to dispose of the former Ottoman Empire territories in the region. Now at last we have a clear and simple set of maps that shows the difference. Hussein wanted everything; all the way from the entire Arabian Peninsula (which includes today Oman; Yemen; Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States); the Sinai; Jordan; Syria; Iraq; Israel and Lebanon. A nice; tidy package of real estate. All that for what? Merely a pledge to side with the British against the Ottomans. What a deal. But since the British had at the same time made promises to the Jews for the establishment of a “national home in Palestineâ€; they had to keep that part out of the grandiose map dreamed by the Sheriff of Mecca. That exception actually streched all the way from what are today Israel; Lebanon and coastal Syria. Seeing it clearly defined visually really helps (pp. 45-46).Get this book and have fun learning. Acquiring solid information is the best way to shut off the rabid anti-Israel sloganeers who have no idea about what they’re screaming; or the countless academic and media liars counting on the fact that their audiences don’t know anything and will therefore swallow everything they say or write without a whimper. You can be the difference between the perpetuation of the fictional Palestinian narrative and a restoration of the truth based on solid historical information. “Israel-Palestine for Critical Thinkers†will help you immensely to become that person.PS. It is straight-forward and easy to understand and it really encourages it's readers to learn all sides of the Israel Palestine conflict and come to our own conclusions based on the facts rather than feelings. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in this important topic and wants a non-biased and accessible education about a very complex subject.
