Jimmie Lee James: Two Lives; Two Deaths; and the Movement that Changed America

ebooks Jimmie Lee James: Two Lives; Two Deaths; and the Movement that Changed America by Steve Fiffer; Adar Cohen in History

Description

The story of the first stage of Europe's expansion inot the Americas usually focuses on the personal actions of Christopher Columbus. Nevertheless; the enterprise of the Indies was a collective endeavour. Between Columbus's first voyage in 1492 and 1504 when he returned to Spain for the last time; thousands had sailed from Spain to the Americas. Their voices have largely been forgotten; but they have not been lost. The testimony those witnesses made; duly recorded and preserved; is the focus of this volume. The material has been available in the Spanish archives since the sixteenth century. Some historians used it in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and begining in the 1960s a group of Spanish scholars led by Antonio Muro Orejon published a definitive Spanish-language version. That is the basis of this edition; the first and only English-langauge version available. The dispositions of the individual witnesses provide evidence that the traditional picture of Columbus needs re-examination. This volume offers fascinating and unfamiliar information about the first voyages.

BrownThis is an amazing book that exposes our racist civil rights past; the struggles of african americans; and the few whites who helped; to overcome the injustice and pain; and the relevance to our current race relations today.Like so many of the worlds historic examples of how humans can be so cruel and ignorant of the right way we should exist together; we shall never forget. The story of these two men and their brutal death was extremely moving and a book all should read.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A compelling account of the Civil Rights MovementBy Michael J. KatzSteve Fiffer and Adar Cohen provide a tense "you are there" narrative to the civil rights protests in Marion and Selma; Alabama that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. With diligent research and a sensitive touch; they portray the lives of Jimmie Lee Jackson and Rev. James Rabb; providing a human touch as well as underlining contemporary relevance.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Essential reading for anyone concerned about the ongoing struggle for equality in America.By Christine A. WolfCovering what I was never taught in school -- the living; breathing; human perspectives from the Civil Rights movement -- the authors bring to life the raw; in-the-moment chaos; the voices demanding justice and the historic unity borne of passion and peace. Recommended for anyone interested in the history and humanity of the fight for equality. I wish I'd read this book in high school.
