With mounting controversy over his being made a saint; this focus needs to be a vehicle to enter a deeper dialog about European contact and colonization in the Americas. Educational and entertainingBy john garippaI must admit; I originally ordered this book because I love Carmel; California and I was interested in hearing some history about my favorite town. However; after finishing the book; Orfalea has left me with a tremendous respect for Serra and the other Spanish missionaries. It was fascinating to learn about the people behind the names of California cities; towns; and roadways. I also loved his treatment of the Catholic religion. I believe he painted a fair picture of the tension that exists between national conquest and honest evangelism. I highly recommend this book.
