The first complete biography ever published of Group of Seven artist and spokesman Lawren Harris. Lawren Harris (1885-1970) is among the most iconic of Canadian artists. Harris was an outspoken defender of modernism; and a very private person. In this gripping; sympathetic account; James King writes about Harris’ public persona as the spokesman for the Group of Seven as well as his championship of Canadian art and artists. Born to great wealth; Harris spent much of his existence selflessly promoting Canadian painting and the interests of his fellow artists. But Harris’ own personal struggle to become an artist was long and complex; and he was beset by much turmoil throughout his life. When; early in 1930; he achieved his creative peak – in paintings such as North of Lake Superior – he turned his back on representational art and spent the remainder of his career becoming an abstract painter. Harris’ unhappy first marriage; his flight to New Hampshire and New Mexico; his sometimes overbearing attitude towards younger artists; and the full magnitude of his inner struggles are all dealt with fully in this sensitive; engaging narrative that captures the complexity of the man behind the mask.

An excellent study tool; but NOT useful to learn the course.By GenevaloopThis book was suggested by my APUSH teacher as the best book to practice the exam. He is a great teacher; and definitely knew what he was doing; as over 90% of his students pass; most getting a 4 or 5. I personally got a 5; using this book almost exclusively to practice the test. My teacher suggested this; along with the required Amsco textbook that we learned the material from. However; this book does NOT aim to teach APUSH from start to finish. Rather; it serves as a great study tool; not a teaching tool. It is perfect to solidify your understanding of the exam and course during the last month or so of the class. The reason this study tool was suggested by my teacher is because the test questions are more difficult than those in the exam. This allows you to be prepared for some of the more challenging questions on the actual exam; rather than preparing you for only the easier 70% of the MC questions; making the difference between a 4 and a 5. The 4 included practice exams also made a huge difference.Do note; however; that this book does seem to have a few minor errors that will not ultimately affect the exam. I say this because some people are really against getting a study book that is not perfect in this regard; no matter its actual studying potential. I am not one of these people; so I won't take a full star off for that.If you study well using this for a half hour a day for a month before the exam and take 2 (or more if you are not yet confident) practice tests from this book; you are pretty much guaranteed a 4 or 5 on the exam; IF YOU ALSO PAID ATTENTION TO THE IN-SCHOOL CLASS. Otherwise; I would suggest substituting or complementing this study tool longer; more comprehensive book for at least 2 months to learn the course if you want a 5.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The teacher made good use of it as she assigned lessons from the book. Many times we order products as parents hoping for the best and we get something that just sits on our kid's desk unopened. This was not the case for this study manual.6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Pretty much the same as 2015; with "2016" and a new cover slapped on it.By John R. KennedyThis was useless for me. I purchased this to add to my library of "new" APUSH multiple choice questions (the ones that are used on the current exam). The 2016 version of the book hasn't changed a single one of them; they're the exact same questions as in last year's book.I found the questions very useful in preparing my kids and in helping me design similar types of questions; but I thought they'd at least update the practice questions; exams; short answer questions and DBQs. They didn't.
