Killing the Bismarck: Destroying the Pride of Hitler's Fleet

audiobook Killing the Bismarck: Destroying the Pride of Hitler's Fleet by Iain Ballantyne in History

Description

The 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing (FIW) was sent to Korea in December 1950 expressly to deal with the threat posed by the all-new MiG-15 fighter that had made its combat debut the previous month. It remained the sole Sabre wing in-theatre for a full year; its pilots tangling with Russian-flown MiGs up over the Yalu River on a near-daily basis. Through sheer skill and superior machinery; the 14th FIW prevailed and the skies over North Korea remained in UN control. This book includes numerous photos of aces and their aircrafts; as well as extensive first-hand accounts.

SuhrerSure; we all know the story of the most famous battleship in history; but Ballantyne's research and writing takes it to a whole new level. Ballantyne wastes no time; getting right to the chase. The telling is mercifully unencumbered by excessive back story or digression. The account is riveting. I was unable to put it down until I had finished it. The story is followed by notes and appendices every bit as exceptional as the rest. The Kindle version is wonderfully priced and contains many useful links to related sites. Also includes photographs and charts.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Spellbinding!!By DavidA fascinating account of the famous naval battle and riveting in every way.As others have noted; the story is told primarily from the standpoint of the British navy's engagement with the German battleship. While this in no way detracts from the story itself; if one wishes to learn more from the German perspective; further reading is in order. That said; this is an immensely engaging account.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. In depth perspective on the hunt and successful killing of the most infamous German warshipBy David W MusalAn excellent; but highly technical account of the hunt for and subsequent destruction of the most feared and hated German warship of all time. The details can get very time consuming; but the main chapters and the appendices are quite easy to read and understand. The book does a good job of capturing the incredible need for the Royal Navy to bring the Bismarck to 'justice; not just for Britain's sake; but for the sake of the Western Democracies. It shattered the myth of the 'invincibility' of The Third Reich.
