Kizil "Crossroads of Commerce and Meeting of Minds"By KunoichiI have always been fascinated by the "Silk Road"; Central Asia and Buddhist paintings and manuscripts and read every book I could find on about them. This book is an in depth look at the wonderful Kizil cave complex located in Xinjiang; China. Published in 2008 it contains new research which was facilitated by the translation of manuscripts based on a formerly unknown language opening "new doors for our understanding of the culture and religion of this region in the 1st millennium." New caves are still being discovered; and this book brings together scholarship much of which is "not readily available in English." Though the Buddhist wall paintings are damaged the accompanying essays describe what is there but often difficult for the reader to make out or interpret; making it possible to follow the commentary. Its a time saver for readers. Beautifully published; with large photos in color.
