Race and Racism in the West: Crusades to the Present is an anthology for use in courses on multiculturalism and ethnicity. The book addresses some of the western hemisphere’s historical attitudes about racial identity. These include the concept of white privilege; the presence of paternalism; and the desirability of a color-blind society. A discussion of the psychology of the colonizer and the colonized demonstrates how historic processes cast long shadows over many societies; and that today's issues are often rooted in the past. The reader is divided into sections that cover the historic roots of racism and colonialism as seen in the Crusades; medieval anti-Semitism; the destruction of the Indies and Colonial Mexico; scientific racism and Nazi Germany; and nationalism; colonialism and post-colonialism. There are also sections on color-blindness and white privilege; and Afro-Latin America. The diverse reading selections range from an excerpt from Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf; to Eduardo Bonilla-Silva's 2010 work Racism without Racists and from Thomas Asbridge's analysis of the crusades to a discussion of Sigmund Freud's imaginary trip to South Park. Race and Racism in the West provides students with a thought-provoking examination of an issue that is both rooted deep within the past and completely contemporary. Paul Sweeney received his B.S. in history at Eastern Michigan University. He received his M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies at California State University; San Bernardino; where he currently teaches courses on Race and Racism. Professor Sweeney is also a lecturer in Latin American Studies at the University of Redlands. His interest in and appreciation for ethnic diversity stems from fieldwork in Cuba. He is working on a number of scholastic articles and planning his Ph.D. Studies.

What an exciting and informative book to read in these present times (March; 2014)By GuntherAlthough I am not a hunter; I thoroughly enjoyed reading Land of the Bear by Denny Geurink. This book covers the two decades the author spent organizing and leading hunting expeditions all over Russia from Crimea to Siberia. His trips began in 1991 when he was invited by Gorbachev's government to visit; hunt and film adventures with the express purpose of attracting American tourists and opening up the Soviet Union. But Land of the Bear is about so much more than hunting. As Denny visited from year to year; he experienced first hand the evolution of the Soviet Union from a repressive; backward society to the more progressive; open culture of present day Russia. The author's experiences give us glimpses into the lives of native Russians; from those living in Moscow to those in more rural areas during this changing time. This is a fast moving book of stories of excitement and danger that hunters will enjoy as well as the rest of us who enjoy reading of the personal experiences of an American who suddenly finds himself dealing with people from the KGB to American astronauts.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Exciting and informative read!By KS SotoI was really surprised at the historical perspective of this book. This book gives great insight into the people and history of Russia and the changes that took place over the years. I found that I could hardly put this book down! It was interesting to learn how people lived and the challenges that they faced. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in not only adventure but true first hand historical perspective. I found myself on the edge of my seat several times throughout this read; especially while reading the chapter about the bear attack and the cell phone call to mom...you will have to read it to believe it!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must for anyone booking a first huntBy PeteA wonderful insight into the hunter / outfitter relationship. A must read for any hunters looking to go on their first booked hunt. The stories in this book will help insure you have a quality hunt anywhere you go. It is a history lesson into the truth behind the Cold War with Russia. I laughed out loud multiple times. It stirred memories of my many hunting camps and the great friends that I have made on those hunts. My regret now is that I did not go hunting with Denny G. years ago; because I would have enjoyed that type of adventure.
