Land of the Firebird: The Beauty of Old Russia

ebooks Land of the Firebird: The Beauty of Old Russia by Suzanne Massie; Suzanne Massie in History

Description

Women historically have been denigrated as lower than men or viewed as privileged. Dr. Alice von Hildebrand characterizes the difference between such views as based on whether man's vision is secularistic or steeped in the supernatural. She shows that feminism's attempts to gain equality with men by imitation of men is unnatural; foolish; destructive; and self-defeating. The Blessed Mother's role in the Incarnation points to the true privilege of being a woman. Both virginity and maternity meet in Mary who exhibits the feminine gifts of purity; receptivity to God's word; and life-giving nurturance at their highest.ABOUT THE AUTHORAlice von Hildebrand received a master's degree and doctorate in philosophy from Fordham University in New York. She taught at the Hunter College of the City in New York; the Catechetical Institute in Arlington; Virginia; the Thomas More College in Rome; Italy; Franciscan University in Steubenville; Ohio; and Ave Maria College in Ypsilanti; Michigan. She lectures in Canada; South America; Western Europe and the United States; and is the author of several books including Greek Culture: The Adventure of the Human Spirit; A Philosophy of Religion; By Love Refined; By Grief Refined; and Soul of a Lion. She co-authored several books with her husband; Dietrich von Hildebrand; including The Art of Living; Morality and Situation Ethics; and Graven Images.

Ronald Reagan read this book during his time in office to gain a better understanding of the USSR and its people. I wish had come in a kindle format; but the book is wonderful. All of both Suzanne and Robert Massie's books on Russia are well worth reading for those of us interested in this topic.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding; insightful; empathic and well writtenBy CustomerThis book is outstanding and wonderful reading. What a rich culture and history; literature; dance and music. I admire Susanne Mazzie's empathie. A real wonder how she was able to transmit some of her knowledge to president Ronald Reagan who based on ger advise; initiated a close relation with Mikhail Gorbatchev; preparing the most ambitious disarmament treaty in human history. In today's Western media and politics they seem to be painted always as evil and the Boogey Man. Howe pathetic and sad. Russia is also today scientifically; technologically and artistically very advanced and in fact; a European country. My recommendation; if you are interested in this subject or will deal will Russia for profesional reasons; buy this book. You will not regret it.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Book to keep; cherish and read over again with much pleasureBy Karl W. HolmquistThis book is a work of art and a compelling read for anyone fascinated with the history and culture of Old Russia. The hardcover edition is a substantial volume; solidly bound; and nicely illustrated. The author has a rare gift for writing such that a reader can find themselves transported into the legendary past about which she writes.
