Landscapes of Communism: A History Through Buildings

audiobook Landscapes of Communism: A History Through Buildings by Owen Hatherley in History

Description

The Texans from Hood's Texas Brigade and other regiments who fought at Gettysburg on 1-3 July 1863 described their experiences of the battle in personal diaries; interviews; newspaper articles; letters and speeches. Their reminiscences provide a fascinating and harrowing account of the battle as they fought the Army of the Potomac. Speeches were given in the decades after the battle during the annual reunions of Hood's Brigade Association and the dedication of the Hood's Brigade Monument that took place on 26-27 October 1910 at the state capital in Austin; Texas. These accounts describe their actions at Devil's Den; Little Round Top and other areas during the battle. For the first time ever; their experiences are compiled in Texans at Gettysburg: Blood and Glory with Hood's Texas Brigade.

The book provides an overview of the architecture of the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries; citing specific buildings; streets; parks; et cetera. My major complaint with this is the amount of photographs present - there are often pictures to associate with the building being talked about; but more often I found myself browsing with a computer next to me so I could look up pictures of what was being described.Furthermore; this book also includes (as I believe any great nonfiction book should) information and history about the areas being talked about. A description of a housing bloc is not just a description of the walls and the windows; but also a description of the neighborhood; the city; the economy of that city; and that city's place within the history of the Soviet Union. A great read.0 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Documents communism's crimes against architectureBy M. HeissEveryone already knows the worst of it:Communism's crimes against human lifeCommunism's crimes against economic prosperityCommunism's crimes against the environmentThis book fills in another gap:Communism's crimes against beautyCarefully documenting example after example of barren structures; devoid of charm; grim to live in; brutal at every glance. Entire plazas of hideous concrete. Once-lovely city centers transformed into lifeless hulking chunks. Miserable! All of this done on purpose... by leftists who hate your individuality.
