Lavochkin's Piston-Engined Fighters - Red Star Vol. 10

audiobook Lavochkin's Piston-Engined Fighters - Red Star Vol. 10 by Yefim Gordon in History

Description

Long viewed as an exotic wonderland of unimaginable treasures; the Mughal Empire (1526–1857) was; in reality; the mightiest Islamic empire in the history of India. In The Empire of the Great Mughals; historian Annemarie Schimmel describes the political; military; and economic rise of the Mughals; the incredible unfolding of the empire’s power and splendor; and the empire’s gradual collapse at the hands of the British. Beginning with a concise historical overview; Schimmel paints a detailed picture of daily life in the empire: the role of rank in this strictly hierarchical society; the life of women; and the various religions; languages; and styles of literature of the era. She pays particular attention to the remarkable accomplishments and techniques of artists at the Mughal court—including the Taj Mahal; the most impressive demonstration of the Mughal rulers’ refined sense of beauty. The capstone to the career of Annemarie Schimmel; whom the New York Times called “one of the 20th century’s most influential scholars of Islam;” The Empire of the Great Mughals is a fascinating portrait of an exquisitely rich and refined civilization.

Great Book on Important Soviet FighterBy Jason WisniewskiWith about 25;000 Lavochkin piston engined fighters built both during and after World War II; these aircraft rank as one of the key Soviet combat aircraft types. This book is in roughly chronological format; beginning with the development of the LaGG-3 before turning to the La-5 and La-7 and post-war La-9 and La-11. Within each section the versions with different power plants and armament are detailed; and brief operational histories are provided. Many of the photographs are previously unpublished. The book concludes with three-view line drawings of each fighter type; statistical performance tables; and paintings showing in vivid color different sample aircraft. Unlike other books on this topic; much of the information is new given recently opened Russian/Soviet archival material. In short; this is a good book to have on an important Soviet fighter series.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good Reference BookBy Jason N. MooreA comprehensive history of the Lavochkin fighters with piston engines; including the postwar La-9 and La-11 all-metal designs. Full of nice photographs; a good reference book on these fighters. I was especially interested in the La-9 and La-11; (which were new designs and not just developments of the wartime Lavochkins); as the English-language coverage of them is very meagre. All-in-all; an excellent book on an interesting; and in the case of the wartime wooden Lavochkin fighters; very important series of fighters. Highly recommended.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Solid Lavochkin historyBy ignorance is blissAnother great title on Soviet aircraft by Mr. Gordon. Lavochkin fighters don't really get the attention that MiGs and Yaks did back in the day. The coverage of post war aircraft La-9 and La-11 is an added bonus. I didn't know their was an La-7 UTI trainer until I read this. Great modeler reference.
