A great piece of historyBy DavidIf you’re a fan of Civil War history; this book is a must read for the single fact it’s a collection of letters spanning the war years written by a member of the USSS. There are many great glimpses into the life of a soldier in the field; some written; some written between the lines.Spoilers Alert: ....Young William seems to regret joining the army within minutes of signing the enlistment papers. The first two years of the war and letters between him and his mother are dominated by the topic of how he can get out of the military or as far from the sound of gun fire as possible by any means possible; including faking sickness; deserting; pleading with congressmen. He tries all three and a lot more. Most of the third year of the war; William spends as a deserter; until a bounty hunter drags him back. I found the letters of 1864/65 the most interesting. Williams becomes a bit more soldierly in mind set as the Overland campaign of those year plays out.Definitely a keeper for the library .
