Fascinating Well-Researched Look at Lincoln's DepressionBy Connie NealI collect Lincoln books; and have read most of the must-have Lincoln titles written between 1865 and 2012. This one has been on my wish list for a long time. Now that I am reading it; I am not disappointed! It is a well-researched; well-written view of not only Lincoln's bouts of depression and suicidal tendencies; but also the cultural context in which these aspects of Lincoln's character and life took place. The psychological and psychiatric approaches to clinical depression also fascinated me. Learning about these woven in with the history of Lincoln's life; which I already knew; shed fresh light on what might become a tired topic of study. I also learned much from the discussion of the changing influence and views of religion related to those suffering from depression or "melancholy." The explanation of the kind of "treatment" Lincoln would have received from the doctors of his day is horrifying but fascinating; giving me even more sympathy and respect for Mr. Lincoln. I will update this review when I finish the book; but I have found it so rewarding only 20% of the way through that I could not wait to review it. This would be beneficial for Lincoln buffs; anyone in the helping or counseling professions; students of history and culture. The notion that Lincoln's depression fueled his presidency is quite an interesting premise but I'm not certain the author fully developed that idea. This is not to say that the book is not a great read. It is. And the author kept me interested throughout. I also bought it because I suffer from depression. The writing by Mr. Shenk was excellent; there was a sentence near the end where he summons up Mr. L.; which I cannot remember but had something to do with transcending. It made me put the book down and cry. He had so eloquently detailed a great man and a great leader who suffered his entire life. Thank you; Mr. Shenk!
