Fantastic Reference ResourceBy Zachary CowsertI'm a history doctoral student doing research on various Texas regiments during the Civil War. I've had Ralph Wooster's book for a little over a month; and this book is an absolute gem. Wooster thoroughly covers every Texas regiment (infantry; cavalry; and artillery) that served in the Confederate army during the Civil War; he generally discusses their experiences in narrative form at the brigade level. The narrative form is a nice touch; instead of a brief paragraph about a given regiment's service; we are instead treated to a mini-story about the brigade's entire service through the war. At the end of the book; Wooster includes a comprehensive bibliographic essay that explores what types of books; articles; etc. have been written about various Texas brigades and regiments. The essay alone makes this book worthwhile. This is not a book to sit down and read; but as reference/research work its first rate. For anyone conducting genealogical or academic research; or wishing to know more about specific Texas regiments; Wooster's book definitely warrants a look. Frankly; I think it deserves a spot on any Civil War historians' bookshelf.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Essential reference and history of Texas Regiments in the Civil WarBy Joe OwenRalph A Wooster did an enormous task of compiling all the regiments from Texas that were in the Civil War. He did an amazing task because Texas supplied thousands of troops and hundreds of regiments in all theaters of the Civil War. From the Texas regiments in the Army of Northern Virginia to the Texas Regiments who invaded Arizona and New Mexico Territories. Mr. Wooster lists every single one that includes Infantry Regimwnts; Cavalry Regiments; Texas Militia Units. Mr. Wooster also lists the Brigade Commanders; Regiment Officers in Charge; and Commanding Officers as well. The history of each regiment from the forming; conflicts and large scale battles involved; to the disbanding of regiments after the surrender this is told very interestingly that will hold the readers interest throughout. What makes this standout is that this is NOT a dry read! This book is a MUST have for researchers of Texas in the Civil War; Texas History; Genealogists; and Civil War Arm Chair Historians. An OUTSTANDING Book that is highly recommended!
