I was somewhat disappointed in his Hammering text because it left outincidents about Newburgh; NY city where I live. I was told that the port here; being it is the deepest area of theriver was a dumping ground for six and dying salves. This when there were still slaveholders in New York. Also;there was an early Black-Native American community formed during slave time on the other side of Mount Beacon. In his subsequent novel; Williams-Myers embroiders the Hessian(?); Black; Native American community in MahwahNJ but perhaps hadn't come on documentation while compiling Hammering.I purchase the text recently to give as a gift from the Hudson River Poets to Natasha Trethewey; poet laureate when she read at Storm King Art Center last month. She seem keenly appreciative. We felt she should know of him as an outstanding local historian. He may no longer be teaching at SUNY/New Paltz. For sure he made his mark when he was here with his research and novelization. Hammering for sure is a classics.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. BrillianceBy K. WalcottThis books fills a great gap in African-American history. A very informative read; and a must-have for any black history enthusiast. It's basically a collection of historical essays on the African presence in upstate New York and New York City.
