The Martin PBM Mariner flying boat with its distinctive gull wing was proposed to the Navy in 1937 as a replacement for the very successful Consolidated PBY. It was to be a true open-ocean flying boat; capable of extremely long range with enough offensive armaments to function as a sub hunter or patrol bomber and enough defensive armament to protect itself. It racked up an impressive wartime record as a sub killer in the Atlantic and as a ship killer in the Pacific. The 1;366 production PBMs were built as PBM-1s; PBM-3s; PBM-3R transports; PBM-3Cs; PBM-3Ds; PBM-3Ss; PBM-5s; PBM-5Rs; PBM-5Ss; PBM-5S2s; and PBM-5G and PBM-5A amphibians. In addition to development; testing; variants; and detailed aircraft systems; this book tells each squadron's history and covers usage by the U.S. Coast Guard; the Netherlands; Columbia; Argentina; Uruguay; RAF; RAAF; and civilians. The last PBM was retired from Navy service in 1956 and the last Coast Guard PBM-5G was retired in 1958.

A brutally honest; clear and deep look into; and observation of Mexican immigrants (women); in the USA. I must confess; I originally expected it to be a bit dull – the sort of book that might be “boring but good for you to readâ€. It is not my preferred genre; and I read it because I felt should know about these things. Imagine my surprise when I found not only an interesting book; but a page turner! This author is amazingly talented; it must be one of the most creatively written nonfiction books I have read. It had me captured from page one; and on throughout the entire book. The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is that I reserve those for the goosebumps; (which I my case usually demands generous amounts of magic; wizards; unicorns; evil rings and pointy hats). The only thing I did not like; and that has nothing to do with the author – was the cover; (which put me off buying it for months!). It is so extremely boring and simply not tempting. Instead; this fabulous book should have a great; vibrant; energy-loaded photograph with striking font. Trust me; this wonderful gift is worth the very best “wrapping†it can get.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Brave and Beautiful BookBy Ann LardasThis is a brave and beautiful book. Adriana Paramo searches for Esperanza; a woman she reads about whose daughter died; on the trek from Mexico to America; and whose corpse she carried with her for many miles. Her journey takes her into the world of migrant workers; legal and otherwise. She works along side a series of unforgettable women as she discovers the hidden human cost of cheap vegetables and takes us through the squalor and agony as well as the joys and companionship of the migrant labor life. The book is a rebuke and a triumph. I highly recommend it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. True and Gripping StoriesBy Jennifer AitkenWonderfully written book about life as an Illegal Immigrant in Florida. The overwhelming shock and deprivation these women go through daily to "make ends meet". Stealing an orange or a tomato that they have been picking all day because they are hungry can cost them their job or a whipping or worse! Finishing the book leaves you with the feeling you need to do something about it. Spreading the word through reading the book is a start. I will never hold fruit in my hands without thinking where it really came from and what's its story?Ms Paramo - Congratulations on your Social Justice and Equality Award; well deserved after reading this book.
