Excellent; if concise; history of Eastern Roman EmpireBy premierjamesA very well written story of the founding; existence and eventual death of the eastern successor of the Roman Empire. The writing is more in the style of a novel; drawing the reader into a fascinating carousel of protagonists and villains; heroes and traitors; honorable men and conniving usurpers. This book does well to fill in the gaps in general European history from the fall of Rome itself to the Age of Discovery. Highly recommended.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining; if slightly biased; history of a forgotten empireBy AdamExcellent and entertaining history of Byzantium. The author reveals a bit of bias; especially in his continued support of the concept of the "Dark Ages." Still; Brownworth provides a look at the 1000 year history of Byzantium as the legacy of Rome from a more personal perspective; examining the major personalities of the Empire from Diocletian up to Constantine XI; from Belisarius to Basil Makedon.Excellent choice for a history lover with a Byzantium sized hole in their knowledge; but is not a serious text on the Empire.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Probably the most informative and well written history I have ...By NoMoProbably the most informative and well written history I have ever read. Brownworth's thorough research on the actual history of the Eastern Roman Empire (during its existence it was never called the Byzantine empire) results in a book that is dramatic; full of surprises and highly relevant lessons for our own time in terms of domestic and international politics and economics. After putting this book down; I wanted more and look forward to listening to Brownworth's podcast "12 Emperors;" and reading his other books.
