audiobook Love amid the Turmoil: The Civil War Letters of William and Mary Vermilion by From Brand: University Of Iowa Press in History

Description

The swashbuckling biography of the naval officer known as the Sword of England. Welshman Henry Morgan has come to be portrayed as a black-hearted; fierce pirate. This error in terms and in the assessment of Morgans character led to the filing of the first libel lawsuit; brought in protest to a book published in 1684 claiming he had been an indentured servant; was a pirate; and was responsible for atrocities. In fact; Morgan was commissioned to aid the British navy in fighting enemies of the throne and was a superb military tactician who led a dozen victorious campaigns against massive odds.

A Remarkable War-time RomanceBy CustomerHollywood has given us many tales of relationships that are tested by the separation that war brings about; but Love amid the Turmoil provides readers with an in-depth look at one real-life relationship from the Civil War. During that conflict William and Mary Vermilion exchanged hundreds of letters; and their correspondence eloquently expresses the hopes and fears that both felt as the nation faced its most crucial challenge. The Vermilions were highly literate individuals; and clearly conveyed their thoughts about everything from the purpose of the war to the fluctuations in the price of commodities brought on by the conflict. Fervent abolitionists; they both recognized that the Civil War would forever change the nation's direction if the Union prevailed. Adding to the enjoyment that individuals will experience when reading the book; Donald C. Elder III has done a skillful job of editing Love amid the Turmoil. He has effectively placed the story of the Vermilions into context through endnotes; maps; and illustrations. Anyone interested in reading how two individuals caught up in the turbulence generated by the Civil War managed to keep their love alive would be well served to purchase a copy of Love amid the Turmoil.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
